DIANE ABAPO: Hey Nylo! Where are you originally from, and where’s your favorite place to be right now?

NYLO: I am originally from Chicago, and my favorite place to be… that is a hard question. I got to go to France for the first time ever last year, where I stayed in a castle. I really liked it there. I mean, anyone would… so I would be alright being there again.

Otherwise, I've been traveling to New York, and I think I need to live there. Whenever I'm there, and people mistake me for a local…I get pretty excited.

Can you remember your first experience ever with music? What’s the earliest song you can remember listening to?

I remember very vividly listening to Stevie Knicks and Alannah Myles, while driving 80mph around a lake, all the windows and sunroof open, with an older, Greek, male, lookalike version of me (aka my Dad) singing in all the words to every song. He loved music, and music became such a part of how we spoke to each other. It doesn't surprise me that all I've ever wanted to do was, make the thing that brought my Dad the most happiness…. Music.

The names of the songs I remember were "Dreams", "Edge of Seventeen," and "Black Velvet."

Where do you feel most SUSPEND-ed, as in, when do you lose track of time… feel completely out of your element in the best possible way… forget whatever it is you’re going through & just ESCAPE?

Really only when I'm writing, or performing. I think that's why it's so addicting.

Its nice to tune out of reality for a second and be in that alternate universe.

What’s your favorite memory?

I have them all the time. I wish you could break it into categories… For example, the favorite childhood memory, professional memory, recent memory… etc.

I had a lot of fun terrorizing the town with my friends growing up. There is one memory I love, that reminds me why life is so simple and amazing…. It was a night all my friends agreed to sneak out and meet up outside… of course wearing black, head to toe, not excluding the black face paint… and to run around and cause havoc.

The plan was to take all the predominant lawn ornaments around the neighborhood and switch them with other people's lawn ornaments. We woke up early the next morning to watch the confusion take place… and it was pretty much everything we hoped for and more. If you can imagine, between 7 and 10am when everyone leaves to go work, they also had to notice that their beautiful gargoyle, or flamingo collection, or birdbath, or lawn chair, or whatever it was, was now looking snuggly on their neighbor's yard instead of where it belonged?! People were really upset, understandably. I remember it as a highlight of my life though. There was a lot of laugher.

Where’s home for you?

…Wherever my mom is.

I left home pretty young and as a result I think, I really really don't take that relationship for granted.

Family is home.
